Royal Society Historic Scientific Papers

The Royal Society has put online their historical journal archive. The archive consists of some 60,000 historical scientific papers dating back as far as 1665. This is a fun collection to browse through even if you have no ancestors who were scientists. Included in this collection is Benjamin Franklin’s famous paper on his electrical experiments with kites, geological papers written by Charles Darwin plus Sir Isaac Newton’s first published scientific paper. The archive can be searched by author, title of the paper and time period. Access is free.

Ancestry have added a number of interesting records to their database recently.
The Australian Electoral Rolls database has been updated to include years ranging from
1903 – 1980 (previously only available up to 1954).
For those with convict ancestors, you may find the following databases to be of interest.
- UK Royal Navy Medical Journals, 1817-1857
- UK Surgeon Superintendents’ Journals of Convict Ships, 1858-1867
These databases contain indexed images of medical journals kept by surgeons aboard convict ships sailing from England to Australia
And the following New South Wales records have been added

Familysearch

A lot has been happening at FamilySearch recently. They have created a new index collection of Essex parish records. This collection includes christenings, marriage and burial records. The 538,000 records in the collection span the years 1538 to 1900. FamilySearch has also managed to put online a rare collection of Russian Orthodox Church records from the province of Tver, which is just north of Moscow. The collection was acquired from the state archive and includes records of births, baptisms, marriages, deaths and burials. The records span the period 1722 to 1918 (the end of World War I). Also now available are some 2.3 million searchable Hungarian civil registration images. This collection includes births 1895 to 1920, marriages 1895 to 1950 and deaths 1895 to 1980. Access to all these collections are free.

Irish Archives Resource

The Heritage Council of Ireland has just funded and launched a major new web portal called the Irish Archives Resource. It enables researchers to locate archival collections in Ireland that are relevant to their research. The intent of the site is to essentially act like a giant card catalogue for anyone doing ancestral work on Ireland. A search function allows users to pull up the relevant collections. A detailed listing is provided for each collection along with instructions on how to access the collection either online (if available) or physically at a public location in Ireland. Many of the major city and county archives in Ireland have already contributed to the website and much of it would be of interest to anyone with ancestors from Ireland. Access is free.

Hearth Tax Online

New South Wales, Australia, Registers of Coroners' Inquests, 1796-1942.
This database contains registers of coroners’ inquests for New South Wales, Australia, for the years 1796–1942. Coroners were responsible for inquiring into any unnatural or sudden deaths in their jurisdiction. They also investigated deaths when a body was unidentified, a cause of death was uncertain, or the deceased was in the care of the state. Coroners could investigate fires that caused destruction of property, as well. Magistrates could take depositions about circumstances of death in more remote areas where no coroner was available.

The International Committee of the Red Cross Archives collects, preserves and makes available for research ICRC documents dating from the organization's inception to the present day. The ICRC's historical archives comprise 6,700 linear metres of textual records and a collection of photographs, films and other audiovisual material. Go to http://maps.familysearch.org/ Enter a place name to access information about parish jurisdictions, including parish register and bishop’s transcripts dates, divisions such as county, civil registration district, probate court, diocese, rural deanery, poor law union, hundred and province. You can even see a map of other parishes within a certain distance, from ¼ mile up to 15 miles.

Campaspe Library periodically offers free beginners classes in Online Genealogy Resources, holding 2 hour classes in each Branch Library. Classes cover a range of resources, from online databases to lookup exchanges to mailing lists, and exeryone attending is given a list of all the sites covered during the class, plus more sites listed on the Library Homepage. Anyone interested in attending a class please contact your local Branch Librarian to find out when the next class will be held.
